Meeting Seniors' Housing Needs
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans age 50 and older will increase 30 percent in the next 20 years, growing from 100 million in 2010 to 130 million in 2030. A recent report by AARP's Public Policy Institute and the Center for Housing Policy outlines strategies to meet the housing needs of this growing demographic. Some of the recommended strategies include making homes more affordable for mature adults; weatherizing homes to reduce energy costs and improve health outcomes; connecting existing homes with social services; expanding transportation options for mature adults; and expanding housing choices for mature adults.

Water Restrictions Valencia Lakes
Information provided by Marisa Lufkin
Many of you may be aware that Hillsborough County increased the allowable watering schedule from one time per week to two times per week. While this is great news for many Hillsborough County residents it will not immediately benefit Valencia Lakes for the following reason:
Our current Water Use Permit, issued by SWFWMD, regulates the total amount of water used by our project over the course of the year. The permit does not regulate the number of waterings per month or week so this new policy provides more flexibility going forward but it doesn't increase the amount of water we may irrigate with.
This recent policy change will be most useful once our new pump station is operational and the weather places a high demand on the project's turf and landscaping. At that time we will be able to water enough to prevent hot spots and a decline in the turf's health.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this issue.
Sincerely,
Marisa Lufkin

History of Wimauma
Wimauma was founded by Captain C.H. Davis in 1902. That year, Davis helped build the Seaboard Air Line Railroad connecting Turkey Creek and Bradenton. Davis decided to found a town at the half-way point, opening a post office there in on October 24, 1902. Davis named the town by taking the first letters of the names of his three daughters, Willie, Maude, and Mary. The town had the railroad tracks as the western boundary and was centered around Lake Tiger, now called Lake Wimauma. The town was officially incorporated in 1925 as the county's fourth municipality, but the city government ceased to function some time in the 1930s. In 1993 this fact was rediscovered, but it was concluded that the incorporation was no longer valid after about 60 years without a city government. Currently, Wimauma is the site of the Church Of God (Cleveland, TN) Camp Ground and conference center.

History of Pickleball
Introduction to Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport described as "a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton", played in schools, parks and recreation centers, correctional facilities, camps, and retirement communities mostly in North America. It uses a simplified combination of tennis rules and strategies.
History of Pickleball
Pickleball was created during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island - a short ferry ride from Seattle, WA. The original purpose of the game was to provide a sport for the entire family, according to co-inventors U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum.
Pickles was the family dog that would chase after the errant balls and then hide in the bushes, thus Pickle's ball which was later shortened to the namesake of Pickleball. Initially, families played Pickleball in their backyards on a hard surface, on driveways, and on residential dead-end streets. Since the mid-1970's, Pickleball has grown and expanded from a family activity game to a paddle court sport with formalized rules. Now, over 20 years later, Pickleball is played in thousands of school P.E. programs, parks and recreation centers, correctional facilities, camps, YMCAs and retirement communities. This sport is becoming very popular among active senior adults at community centers and is growing in popularity on high school and college campuses.
Valencia Lakes has 4 pickbleball courts for all to enjoy. Check it out sometime soon.

Active Adults and Tennis are a Perfect Match
Today’s active adults are interested in recreational activities that let them socialize while staying in shape. Tennis is a non-contact sport that is popular at many active adults communities for its social, physical and mental aspects. While anyone can see that this sport builds strength and stamina, it also exercises mental clarity as players make quick on-court decisions. Valencia Lakes offers 6 clay courts to play on.
